Happy First Birthday, Storyville Austin!

August 28, 2008 by Josh Harvey

One year ago today, Storyville Austin opened its doors on the first day of the Fall 2007 semester at the University of Texas.

In the beginning, Storyville Austin had only a handful of Austin designers on board, but we did some good ones -- most notably Jeremiah the Innocent ( Daniel Johnston ), Will Heron , Rural Rooster , and Kelly D Tees .  We had limited offerings and even a few bare shelves.  One year later, we have a unique collection of more than 40 Texas designers in our shop on the Drag .  And we even show a little love to our Louisiana designers in our Austin shop.

If you're anywhere near 20th & Guadalupe today, swing by the shop and have a birthday cookie on us (it is Free Cookie Friday , afterall).  We'd love to celebrate with you.

Over the next year, we're going to be adding even more Texas designers to our all-star lineup.  We're also going to be making lots of improvements to the shop.  We're going to build many more shelves and cabinets (we're almost completely out of space!).  One of these physical improvements is going to be unveiled today.  On its first birthday, Storyville Austin is finally getting a really outdoor sign.  It took Gabriel over a week to craft and paint the wooden sign -- and it is striking.

Our "Art-in-Progress" project will also continue.  Over the past year, 33 student artists from the University of Texas , St. Edward's University and Austin Community College have painted their art directly on the walls of our shop.  If you haven't seen the mural they've collectively created, you're missing out.  Although it will likely take another year to finish, it is already something incredibly unique -- and uniquely Austin.

Finally, over the next year, we're going to be rolling out Texas-themed Storyville Original tees.  These designs, which will address local Austin themes, and will be prominently featured on Storyvile's , which will be unveiled next Thursday , September 4 .

Wish us luck in Year Two of Storyville Austin.  We've come a long way, but we still feel like we're getting started.
